A large variety of microorganisms coexist with us in our digestive tract, on our skin, within the genito-urinary tract, and even within the uterus during gestation. These microbes support our health in a multitude of ways, and imbalances in our microbiome are now known to contribute to numerous localised diseases.

The microflora in our gastrointestinal (GI) tract are particular critical in shaping our health – the influence of this indispensable ecosystem extends well beyond the GI tract, affecting virtually every body system. Imbalances in microbial ecology of the oral cavity, stomach, small intestine, and/or large intestine are now proven to be contributing factors to many systemic diseases –from heart disease to arthritis; from Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) to allergies.

This seminar will explore the latest evidence on how gastrointestinal microflora impacts our health and disease risk. The critical role of gut ecology will be reviewed and practical dietary, lifestyle, nutritional, and herbal solutions for restoring microbial balance will also be discussed.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

What our native microflora says about our health and disease risk

How does diet impact our microbiome and what are the mechanisms via which various dietary factors influence microbial ecology

How microbial shedding by the people around us influences our microbial ecology, and what the implications of this are

Latest understandings on what constitutes commensal vs. dysbiotic microbiota in the oral cavity, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine

New information on small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and small intestinal fungal overgrowth (SIFO)

How dental caries and gum disease are related to microbial balance, and how to use natural medicines to help restore healthy microbial ecology within the oral cavity

What a healthy stomach microbiome looks like, and how to support patients if they are suffering from an overgrowth of Helicobacter pylori

How large intestinal bacterial overgrowth (LIBO) presents in clinical practice, and what to do about it
